Sports Physiotherapy

 
Introduction

This guide is intended as a general introduction to the subject of Sports Physiotherapy. This is an area that is increasing in popularity as a specialism within physiotherapy. Sports Physiotherapy includes first aid, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries, massage and aromatherapy from the casual player to sports persons who need a higher level of mobility and performance. This guide in not intended to be a comprehensive list on the subject of Sport Physiotherapy, but an introduction to resources and sources of information on this subject. It is aimed at undergraduate students and researches although others will also find it useful.

ELECTRONIC INFORMATION RESOURCES

Some institutions and organisations offer literature searches for a fee. Many sports organisations have information available via the World Wide Web. Some require membership or subscription for services they provide. Here are a selection of electronic information resources that will include Sports Physiotherapy and allied materials.

AMED
(Allied and Alternative Medicine)
Provided by the British Library Health Care information Services, Boston Spa. This resource is of interest to anyone who needs information on alternatives to conventional medicine. Approximately 350 biomedical journals are indexed regularly, and relevant articles are taken from other journals. AMED holds over 100,000 records. The database includes English-language and European sources; newspapers and books are also indexed.

SPORTDiscus
Available via the internet and CD-rom.
Developed by the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) in Canada, SPORTDiscus covers both the practical and research literature on sport, physical fitness and physical education. It indexes periodical articles, books, conference proceedings, dissertations and theses, research papers and other publishing forms. The database has over 400,000 records. It also includes HERACLES, a French-language bibliographic database covering sport, physical education and fitness.

ALTIS
The guide to Internet resources in hospitality, leisure, sport and tourism.

BUBL Information Service
A national information service for the Higher Education community.

NISS National Information and Services Systems: information for education provides online information services primarily for the Higher Education sector within the UK. However those in other education sectors such as further education and schools may find it a valuable tool.

OMNI: health and biomedicine
Organising Medical Networked Information is the UK's gateway to biomedical Internet resources. Coverage is in medicine, biomedicine, allied health, health management and related topics.

SOSIG Social Science Information Gateway
SOSIG is an online catalogue of Internet resources each one selected
by a librarian or academic.

Email Discussion Lists on the Web

Email discussion groups allow individuals to communicate with other who share the same interests. In the UK, for example, JISCmail provides a home to over 2,000 discussion lists for the UK Higher Education Community. Sport-med and Physio mailing lists provide a forum for people interested in Sports Physiotherapy.
