How To Find Out
Physical Education
Introduction
This guide in an introduction to physical education. It is not possible
to produce a definitive list as the subject area is so large. It includes
material relevant to P.E. teachers in schools and colleges; P.E. instruction
in particular sports and leisure; and trainers and coaches of sports professionals.
It is intended primarily for A-level and undergraduate students, as well
as researchers, although others will also find it useful.

Books
The selection below are general introductory textbooks for the student
of Physical Education. The emphasis is on P.E. in Britain. Books from
outside the UK, though useful, will describe their own systems, some may
even show comparisons between systems.

Conferences
Index to Conference Proceedings
Wetherby: British Library
Available in printed form and on CD-ROM. Monthly with annual cumulations
of conference proceedings received by the British Library. It has a subject
index which includes Sport and Sports related subjects
Please note that, from 2004 onwards, the monthly Index to
Conference Proceedings will no longer be produced. The annual cumulation
will continue to be offered in 2004. All records included in the index
are now available free of charge via the Web as part of the DSC Conference
File on the British Library Public Catalogue
(BLPC).

Some institutions and organisations offer literature searches for a fee.
Many sports organisations have information available via the World Wide
Web. Some require membership or subscription for services they provide.

Education Recreation and Dance (AAPHERD)
This organisation offers professional support for those involved in PE,
fitness, leisure, dance and other health related areas.
Physical Education Index
Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (Online)
Covers all aspects of health, sports, P.E., recreation and dance. It has
a separate section on reviews of new books.

Available on CD-rom as International ERIC includes physical education

BIDS
Education
This resource is from the Bath Information Data Services at the University
of Bath. It is a web resource available to the higher education community.
It holds the British Education Index (BEl) and the U.S. government education
resources (ERIC) databases.
SPORTDiscus
Available via the internet and on CD-ROM.
Developed by the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) in Canada, SPORTDiscus
covers both the practical and research literature on
sport, physical fitness and physical education. It indexes periodical
articles, books, conference proceedings, dissertations and theses, research
papers and other publishing forms. The database has over 400,000 records.
It also includes HERACLES, a French-language bibliographic database covering
sport, physical education and fitness.
TourCD
Available in CD-rom format. Also known as Leisure Recreation and Tourism
Abstracts. Contents include Leisure, Sport and Physical Education.

Teaching P.E. in Schools
Lessons Plans are a favourite resource for teachers. There are many on
the Web, mostly US-based. They are usually divided into curriculum subject
areas which will include P.E.
National
Curriculum in Action : Physical Education
This Web site uses pupils' work and case study material to show what the
National Curriculum in PE looks like in practice. It includes PE attainment
targets, level descriptions, information on how ICT can be used in teaching
PE, as well as a search facility to locate examples of pupils' work and
descriptions of activities. Some files are in video format and require
QuickTime player software. There is also a discussion section and links
to details of NC Programmes of Study, statutory assessment for key stage
3, and schemes of work at primary and secondary level.
National Curriculum Online : PE
This Web site has links to useful sites and resources covering the programme
of study for PE at National Curriculum key stages 1-4. You can search
for resources by keyword, programme of study, or through the Virtual Teacher
Centre. It has information on the QCA/DfES schemes of work including examples
of pupils' work and links to teacher related material.
P.E. Centre
This is a resource for teachers, students and educators of physical education
and sports leadership, with links to the main British exam boards, national
governing bodies and agencies for sport. The Web site contains specific
GCSE and A level topic links and has a series of downloadable Powerpoint
presentations for GCSE and A level. There are also links to other physical
education related sites and resources, newspaper, television and interactive
sports sites.
Teach PE.com
Approved by the National Grid for Learning (NGfL), this Web site is a
useful resource for teachers of physical education. It contains interactive
quizzes; sections covering Advanced level and GCSE level PE; fitness testing;
injuries and other relevant information such as details of recommended
textbooks from Amazon.com.
Educators'
Reference Desk
Though US-based, this Web site could be adapted to suit teaching in British
schools.

Email Discussion Lists on the Web
Email discussion groups allow individuals to communicate with others
who share the same interests. In the UK, JISCmail
provides over 2,000 discussion lists for the UK Higher Education Community.

Subject Gateways
Gateways organise subjects in to groupings that make it easier to access.
These gateways are regularly updated. Some services are only available
to the Academic Community.
ALTIS
The guide to good quality Internet resources in hospitality, leisure,
sport and tourism.
BUBL Information Service
A national information service for the Higher Education community.
NISS
National Information and Services Systems: information for education provides
online information services primarily for the Higher Education sector
within the UK. However those in other education sectors such as further
education and schools may find it a valuable tool.
OMNI: health and medicine
Organising Medical Networked Information is the UK's gateway to biomedical
Internet resources. Coverage is in medicine, biomedicine, allied health,
health management and related topics.
SOSIG Social Science Information
Gateway
SOSIG is an online catalogue of Internet resources each one selected by
a librarian or academic.
